For those of you who want a little gadget to play with, consider this:

You are probably aware of the G-Tech line of Performance Meters. There website is http://www.gtech.com

They have a couple of models which are very full featured at $199 and $299, cool, but too rich for my blood. They used to make one called the G-Tech Pro. It can still be had at some places, like:
http://www.autobarn.net/gpropeme.html   $184.95

http://www.slickcar.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=2100   $179.99 Each

http://store.yahoo.com/gofast/gtecproperme.html $134.99

or search google shopping and see what comes up

Maybe can find it for less, these were the first 3 that came up on Froogle, Google's comparison shopping site.

You can get one from me for $50.00, 78% off original MSRP!

The G-TECH/Pro is an electronic Performance Meter for automobiles. Plug it in a cigarette lighter, mount it to the windshield and start accelerating. G-TECH/Pro does the rest automatically and displays the results.

Ever since the GTech PRO won the "Best New Accessory Product" award at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas for the original G-TECH the manufacturer hasn't stopped research and development, they went on to develop the G-Tech Pro, and later still, other models.

The G-tech
Pro uses a built in accelerometer to calculate G-forces. When you accelerate, it senses the change in speed and starts an internal timer. By comparing the change in speed with time, it is able to  compute:

0 to 60 mph time
1/4 mile elapsed time (E.T.)
1/4 mile trap speed
Instantaneous lateral acceleration (G s)
Sustained lateral acceleration (G s)
60 mph braking distance
Instantaneous braking Gs
Sustained braking Gs
Horsepower

Now, all of the features above are automatically determined with no outside input at all, except for horsepower. To calculate rear wheel horsepower, you need to let the G-Tech know what your wet weight is including drivers and passengers if any. You tilt the unit until the right weight appears and set it, then level the unit out again, and you are ready. You do not have to start your braking at 60, you can be driving 70 if you like, and brake to a stop. The unit knows when you hit 60, and will begin measuring from that point. As far as accuracy goes, don't ask me, I do not know, but the manufacturer claims:

"In a worst case 0-60 run, the G-Tech will be 1/10  of a second plus or minus off. With horsepower measurements, it is accurate down to + or - 1%..!"

What can you use this info for?

Compare brake pads and tire adhesion
Set optimum brake bias adjustment
Test tires and suspension corner handling
Compare suspension and tire pressures
Test traction devices under launch
Monitor cornering forces on curvy roads

Always Drive Responsibly, and pay attention to the road, not your toys!
